Leveraging our Knowledge to Give Window Manufacturers A Clear & Lean Advantage

September 1st, 2010

H.B. Fuller is committed to advancing the window manufacturing market by continually leveraging our extensive knowledge to develop new innovative formulations that meet the needs of the industry. Our latest introduction, HL-5201 clear backbedding sealant, gives window manufacturers a distinct advantage by providing them with a unique, high performance option to improve aesthetics and enhance lean manufacturing.

We are introducing HL-5201 clear backbedding sealant at GlassBuild America 2010. This sealant joins our HL-5200 series of fast-setting, environmentally-friendly 100 percent solids, single-component family of backbedding solutions, which until now was only available in black or gray. The expansion of the family to now include the clear backbedding sealant gives manufacturers an option that does not yellow with UV exposure and meets AAMA 800 performance requirements.

These patent pending, warm applied sealants are equally well-suited for use in automatic or semi-automatic manufacturing of aluminum, vinyl or wood sash windows. Once applied, these sealants instantly deliver a high strength bond that allows windows to advance to the next processing step without having to wait for a chemical cure. This instant handling strength also allows assembled windows to ship immediately.

Our backbedding sealants are specifically designed to help optimize lean manufacturing processes. They provide immediate handling strength, workable open time and low modulus to help window manufacturers not only save time and floor space but move production from batch to a continuous process for improved throughput.

If you are attending GlassBuild America 2010 in Las Vegas September 14-16, we hope you will visit us in booth #2041 to learn more about our new clear backbedding sealant. If you are not attending the show or would like information in advance or after the show, please contact us at 866-835-4238.

Assessing Adhesive Raw Material Issues and Trends

August 5th, 2010

H.B. Fuller publishes the Adhesives Raw Material Report to provide customers with an assessment of key issues affecting raw material trends. Based on our collective knowledge and global perspective derived from in-house research and publicly available news sources, our Raw Material Report helps our customers understand the current forces (including Mother Nature) that shape the availability and cost of adhesive raw materials.

In the latest  issue of H.B. Fuller’s Raw Material Report, the cover story examines the current disconnect between falling oil prices and the persistently high raw material costs for adhesive manufacturers. The story also explains why low natural gas prices continue to put pressure on by-product supplies needed for adhesives.

H.B. Fuller’s dedicated sourcing and technical groups monitor global trends like these and focus on identifying alternatives that we believe have a more secure supply future than traditional options. The H.B. Fuller R&D team develops innovative new products using these alternative materials such as our featured LiquiLoc® adhesive, an alternative to traditional water-based adhesives for cold glue labeling.

You can download and read the full Raw Material Report in English here.  We have also translated our Raw Material Report into Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese for our Latin American customers. These versions can be downloaded from the Literature link on HBFullerStrength.com.

Making an Environmental Impact at ForMóbile 2010

July 28th, 2010

This week, H.B. Fuller is exhibiting at ForMóbile 2010, which opened yesterday in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The premier wood and furniture trade show in Latin America, ForMóbile has drawn 750 exhibitors from Brazil and abroad to the exhibit hall that spans 76,000 m2 of total space.

We are showcasing our high performance Rakoll® woodworking adhesives in stand Nro C – 15. Rakoll, which focuses on the increasing need for adhesives with reduced environmental impact, has helped our customers address their environmental needs for manufacturing doors, panels, flooring and laminate products.

Our Rakoll ECO 3 formulation has allowed customers to successfully switch from adhesives based on ureaformaldehyde to adhesives based on polyvinyl acetate, thereby reducing the impact on the environment. Rakoll ECO 3 can be used for a wide range of applications, and it is particularly well-suited for flat lamination of HPL and veneer or paper used in the door, furniture and parquet flooring industries.

Formaldehyde-free Rakoll ECO 3 is a single component adhesive that requires no mixing machines and reduces adhesive waste. It also allows lower pressing temperatures that are gentler to the material being processed and results in lower energy costs during production.

Co-exhibiting in our booth at ForMóbile 2010 is our subsidiary and partner, Adalis. Their knowledge in veneer composing, waste and wood loss reduction, mill flow optimization and lean Six Sigma methodology is the perfect complement to H.B. Fuller’s innovative adhesive formulations for the furniture manufacturing industry.

Stop by and see us at our booth to learn how H.B. Fuller and Adalis can improve your wood products and processing.

The Impact of Disasters and Weather on Raw Materials Supply

June 30th, 2010

While the Gulf oil spill is causing many serious issues, immediate raw materials supply issues for adhesive manufacturers are not among them. The strong demand for surfactants to break up the oil on the Gulf’s surface water however, is tightening the ethylene oxide market. Derived from ethylene oxide, the same feedstock used for antifreeze and polyester resin, ethyoxylated surfactants are used to stabilize some water-based products. Demand is increasing at a time when alternative raw materials such as Malaysian palm oil are in reduced supply due to the drought caused by last year’s El Niño.

According to the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center, El Niño dissipated during May and conditions are favorable for a transition to La Niña conditions during June – August 2010.  This prediction is supported by recent observations that show cooling trends in the Pacific Ocean. The emergence of La Niña is expected to bring an active 2010 Atlantic hurricane season—in fact, the first storm of the season, Alex, is already ramping up. Hurricanes in this region will increase supply concerns and an expected cooler winter in North America will potentially spur greater natural gas demand.

Watch HBFullerStrength.com to learn more about the latest global conditions and forces affecting raw materials supply.
